MOCOVE is a drug-free means for reducing motion sickness. It works through a process called visual entrainment. One of the primary reasons that people get motion sick is that the inertial and visual environments are in discordance. MOCOVE relieves this discordance by measuring the inertial motion of, for example, a ship and then modifying the image of a display so that it better matches the inertial environment. For example, if one were viewing a virtual environment in which the horizon was displayed, MOCOVE would cause this artificial horizon to move as if it were a real horizon. Independent human subject tests on laboratory motion devices have shown MOCOVE to be highly effective, reducing motion sickness by over a factor of five in some trials. The U.S. Navy is currently conducting independent sea trials of MOCOVE.    More>

Smartmat is a system that has the capability to measure human physical activity in an arbitrary area. Knowing where people are and knowing traffic patterns in key locations are vital for security, and in emergency situations one of the first questions asked is “How many people are in the building right now?”

Artis is exploring Smartmat technologies that address these concerns by creating electronic footprints and then processing this information to get people counts, traffic patterns and even individual weight and size estimates.

Smartmat is currently being developed by Artis, LLC and the Harvard Prevention Research Center.  More>

Motion Simulator is suitable for use in conducting spatial disorientation research. In support of the Naval Research Laboratory, Artis, LLC developed two different types of motion platforms that are suitable for use in conducting spatial disorientation research. One system is called the “One-DOF” where DOF is an acronym for “Degree of Freedom,” and the other system is called the Three-DOF. Both systems are designed to fit into a standard-sized office. All components fit through a 30-inch wide door, and are suitable for deployment by a 2-man team. The One-DOF system provides pitch motion and a small level of heave for subjects seated off-center. The Three-DOF provides pitch, yaw and roll motions. Both systems support rapid acceleration, quiet operations, ergonomic design features, and are driven by electric motors.    More>

WheelTrak is a system for measuring human energy expenditure levels of wheelchair-bound subjects. System features include:

  • 3-axis accelerometer for incline and acceleration measurement.
  • 6 hall-effect sensors for wheel tracking.
  • GPS for position location.
  • Heart rate monitor.
  • 1 week continuous operation on battery pack.
  • Data storage on Smartmedia card.    More>
